We live in the era of information overload. What to do?
The answer is to be more discerning.
It’s important to stay in touch and to read quality information, to attend great conferences and courses. However, the emphasis should be on the high quality, rather than quantity.
Who are your trusted sources of quality information? Could your list do with a trim?
By limiting your focus to a tighter list of trusted sources you make sure you are not just burning up the hours and wasting time on so-called research or professional development.
In my own work as a consultant I subscribe to a service that curates industry articles and content from the US, so I can keep up to date with the latest thinking. I subscribe to Harvard Business Review for cutting edge business thinking. I also follow a couple of bloggers who provide challenging ideas and useful reading lists that sometimes lead me to reading a book I might not have otherwise discovered.
And, of course, in the process of my work I’m talking to a lot of the leading firms in the profession. That helps to clarify and distill the thinking too.
What does a discerning list of trusted information sources look like for you? It’s certainly worth thinking about.
